Types of compressors
Rotary compressor
This type of compressor is used for smaller jobs, and the type you see in most window air conditioning units. It may be small, but a rotary compressor is one of the most reliable types of compressors available. Along with reliability, another desirable feature is that a small rotary compressor is quiet. Despite these benefits, keep in mind that the rotary compressor is not the most efficient compressor on the market.
Reciprocating compressor
Another type of compressor is the reciprocating compressor. It is the most commonly used compressor today. Reciprocating compressors are also very economical to operate and are commonly used for lower-efficiency, split-air conditioners.
Scroll compressor
The scroll compressor is becoming more common in HVAC equipment, and may even surpass the reciprocating compressor as the most commonly used compressor in the future. Since the ‘80s, it has proven itself reliable and highly efficient.
